Chang Moi Road 2025: The Ultimate Guide to Chiang Mai’s Rattan & Vintage Street
Located on the eastern edge of Chiang Mai’s Old City, Chang Moi Road (also called Chang Moi Kao Road) is the city’s best-kept secret for authentic Lanna handicrafts. Just 5–10 minutes’ walk from Tha Pae Gate, this 1-km stretch is packed with decades-old rattan workshops, trendy cafés, and vintage boutiques—making it the perfect half-day cultural escape.

700 Years of Lanna Weaving Heritage Lanna weaving dates back over seven centuries. In northern Thailand’s humid climate, cotton and later rattan became the primary materials. Women spent months crafting traditional sinh skirts, embedding family beliefs and Buddhist symbols into every pattern. In the 18th–19th centuries, Tai Yuan migrants from Chiang Saen introduced the iconic Jok weave, while royal workshops later created the luxurious “Jok Viang Chiang Mai” using imported British cotton and Chinese silk—pieces now preserved in museums.
Why “Chang Moi”? The name comes from Lanna dialect: “Chang” = elephant, “Moi” = sleepy. Legend says royal elephants grew tired on this stretch when travelling to the Ping River—hence the name.
